This August, I am taking part in Step Up to Breast Cancer for the mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and loves ones who are impacted by this devastating disease.

I am doing this to raise funds for National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to support vital breast cancer research to help save lives.

For them Every step on foot towards Lightning Ridge was taken in honer of everyone affected by Breast Cancer. Those bravely fighting, those whom have survived, the families & loved 1’s, standing beside them & those we carry in our hearts & will never forget. 💕🎀💕 Bringing our towns together, one step at a time 💕🎀💕 When I was young, I knew this lovely man some say he was grump, others say he was warm and kind, he was a WW2 POW veteran. After I helped him change a tyre on his old HG Holden ute, he smiled and cried and he said, now kid come here , he grab my hands and softly spoke - with these hands you may not be able to change the whole world, but with them, you can change the world for one person. And today, that person is me.” So thank u , It touched me so deeply in ways that I can’t explain but in that moment I learned a truly valuable lesson that sometimes actions can speak louder than words. Living in the bush isn’t always easy, but for some of us, we just quietly look after one another—from helping strangers with flat tyres on our rough rugged roads, to making meals or cakes for grieving families to just turning up when someone needs a hand. It is with this outback ausie spirit heart of so many and you know your are that truly made Painting the Highway Pink truly special & possible. After walking from Walgett to Coonamble, I knew I wasn’t finished. That journey showed me that even through our own pain, we can find strength we never knew we had. I felt there was another walk ahead: a walk of honour for every fighter, survivor, family affected by breast cancer and every person we have lost. With each step towards Lightning Ridge, I carried the knowledge and stories of so many people I know and love who have been affected by breast cancer. Their experiences strongly influenced every step, in honour of their appointments, surgery, treatment, fear, exhaustion and changes to their bodies. I also wanted to remember those who have faced breast cancer without someone beside them. Through this fundraiser, I have heard so many stories of heartbreak, strength and survival, and they became part of every step I took on the Castlereagh Hwy. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it felt like the right time to walk again. Our shire is filled with amazing & special towns and communities, like • Burren Junction • Carinda • Collarenebri • Come By Chance • Cumborah • Cryon • Glengarry • Grawin and Sheepyard (Opal Fields • Lightning Ridge • Pokataroo • Rowena but my heart kept leading me back to Lightning Ridge. As Lightning Ridge is a place that is truly close to my heart, in more ways then one. memories of being out, on the opal fields, playing cricket, hearing stories about our towns and learning how something beautiful can be hidden deep within the earth. Many of those memories belong to my stepdad, Mark A. Cooper. He was there when I needed him and helped shape my life, until a mining accident took him from us on 15 October 1996. Thirty years later, on 15 October 2026, I set off from Walgett Post Office towards Lightning Ridge. In my heart, I was walking home to him while carrying the stories and struggles of everyone affected by breast cancer. 💗 The road was long and difficult,but someway, somehow this busted little old tractor hobble wobbled walked and made it there for them. My beautiful mum walked with me to the Namoi Bridge, making those first steps especially meaningful. Paddy O’Brien walked with me to the Collarenebri turn-off before running back to town. His commitment to his family farm, football, fitness and coaching quietly inspires others. Thank you, Paddy, for sharing the road with me and helping me feel less alone. Thank you also to Ian from Designated Drivers Australia Wide, who travelled from Dubbo to escort me and help keep me safe. Your time and care meant so much. There may not have been pink decorations along the highway, but there were horns tooting, hands waving, people stopping to say g’day and generous donations. Every acknowledgement reminded me that I wasn’t walking alone. Jane, a breast cancer survivor, and her husband, a veteran, came to see me on the first day. Jane walked beside me, and I felt honoured to share those steps with someone whose journey was part of the reason for mine. On the second day, the rain joined us too! I wore my Driza-Bone for nearly five kilometres and as I walked the rain went one way and I walked the other.. As I neared Lightning Ridge, Jane, her friends and family, along with my mum, my son and my ex-husband, walked, cheered, helped me so much just make it into town. After the pain, tiredness, doubts and long hours, having them beside me for those final steps is something I will never forget. At 5.09 pm on 16 October, I made it. I walked 78.75 kilometres over 19 hours, 55 minutes and 35 seconds. That amount raised from all of us whom made Painting Part of the Castlereagh HWY Pink, represents far more than money. It represents kindness, compassion and people choosing to support those affected by breast cancer. I was tired and sore, but my hope, faith, memories and the people I was walking for helped me take the next step. When my body wanted to stop, my heart reminded me why I had started. That evening, I was welcomed at the club like a long-lost friend. The meal was wonderful, but the warmth, conversations and genuine welcome made the night unforgettable. Thank you to everyone who walked, waved, stopped, donated, kept me safe, shared my story or welcomed me at the end. You each became part of this journey. To the fighters, survivors, families and those we have lost: every step was taken with you in my heart. Your courage, love and stories matter, and you will never be forgotten. And to my dad, Mark—thirty years on, I carried you with me all the way home. I cannot take away a diagnosis, erase the pain of treatment or undo a family’s loss. But I hope these steps helped someone feel remembered, supported and a little less alone. That veteran’s lesson has stayed with me all these years, & walking this highway was my way of putting it into action—with my hands, my whole heart, my faith, blood, sweat and many tears. One person may not be able to change the whole world. But together, one act of kindness, one step and one heart at a time, we can change someone’s world. 💕🎀

Help Me Paint the Highway Pink Again Last time I walked from Walgett to Coonamble, I covered 120.30 kilometres over three days. It took me 27 hours, 17 minutes and 52 seconds of walking. Every step was for the fighters, the survivors, the families affected by breast cancer, and the people we’ve lost. On 15 October, I’m setting out to walk from Walgett towards Lightning Ridge as part of Paint the Highway Pink. I want to bring people together, raise awareness and support breast cancer research through my NBCF fundraiser. I’d love people to walk, run or ride with me along the way.
