Running (Very Slowly) Towards a Future Without Breast Cancer

Right now, 58 people in Australia are diagnosed with breast cancer every day.

Let’s get one thing straight - I’m not a runner. Six months ago, I couldn’t run for five minutes without questioning all my life choices. But now I’m willingly putting one foot in front of the other for something that matters.

Breast cancer has hit my family and many families I know. I’ve lost aunts and loved ones to this disease, and most recently, watched my auntie-in-law Sodina take on the full breast cancer journey - diagnosis, treatment, and recovery - with more strength and grace than I could ever manage on a good day with a coffee in hand.

I’ve spent the last 12 years working at the Monash Cancer Centre in Moorabbin Hospital. We’re the public breast imaging and treatment hub for the Monash network. Every day, I see the faces of people fighting this disease, and the incredible teams supporting them. I know how much difference research, early detection, and quality care can make - not just as a healthcare worker, but as someone who’s sat with family through the long appointments, the hair loss, the scans, the waiting.

So yeah, I’ve taken up running. Badly. Slowly. And often with very questionable fashion choices (as per my wife). But I’m doing it to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, because research saves lives - and because I’d really prefer future generations not have to go through what mine has.

If you can spare a few dollars, throw them this way. You’ll be helping the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) fund life-saving research. You’ll also be encouraging me to keep running, which is possibly the most shocking plot twist in this entire story.

Let’s outrun breast cancer, or at least jog awkwardly past it. Thanks for your support!

Friday 15th Aug
I’ve had so many messages of support during this challenge, but one from a work colleague really struck a chord with me. They shared how inspired they were by my efforts and my story, and told me about their wife, who was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer at just 30 years old, when their child had only just turned one. After seven tough years, she is now in complete remission.

It’s the donations of the past that funded the research leading to today’s treatment options and success stories like hers/theirs. The reality is, our donations today will help fund the breakthroughs that will save lives tomorrow and in the years to come. Every dollar, every show of support, is an investment in a future where more families get good news instead of heartbreak.

This is exactly why I’m running - to fund vital breast cancer research. Research that helps us understand how breast cancer starts, grows, and spreads, and that drives the development of better tests, treatments and interventions for those facing it.

Thank you to everyone who’s gotten behind this - whether we speak every week or haven’t spoken in years, your generosity is making a real difference. Let’s see if we can push this all the way to $6,500!

It begins tomorrow ...!

Thursday 31st Jul

The challenge officially kicks off tomorrow, and we’re now at $3,349 raised from 29 generous donations.

Not going to lie… I’m having a mild freak-out about all the support and the very real pressure to now run 116+ km without falling apart.

Here’s what keeps it all in perspective for me though:
9 Australians die from breast cancer every single day.
That’s nine families waking up to heartbreak. Every. Single. Day.
It’s a tough, confronting stat and not one we want to talk about, but also a reminder of why this matters so much.  This fundraiser isn’t just about the running. It’s about doing something, anything, together, to help change that number.

So, with that — I’m raising the goal again to $4,000. You’ve already smashed every expectation. Let’s see what one month of running can really do.

Huge thanks to everyone below who have donated since the last update. Your support has been incredible, and it’s already making a difference.

I also want to give a special shoutout today to one of those 29 donations - an anonymous $515 donation from a friend of my Auntie Sodina.
I may not know who you are, but I’m deeply grateful.

The challenge starts tomorrow. Let’s see how far we can go.

Second goal smashed!

Wednesday 30th Jul
Another 12 hours… and we’re now at $2,521 raised!

Honestly, I’m speechless.
The generosity and kindness pouring in over the last couple of days has been overwhelming in the best way. This just keeps growing faster than my legs are ready for.

This cause hits close to home for so many of us.
Whether it's for a mum, an aunt, a sister, a mate - we all know someone. Seeing so many of you rally behind this has been nothing short of incredible.

To everyone who’s donated, shared, or simply taken the time to care — thank you.
Every bit of it matters.

With that… we’re lifting the bar again.
New goal: $3,000.

There’s a full month ahead. Let’s see just how far we can take this together.

48 hours until it starts!

Wednesday 30th Jul
In just 24 hours, 18 donations have raised $1,768.59, and the challenge hasn’t even started yet!

What began as a personal goal - to run 116+ km through August and raise funds for breast cancer research - has already grown into something much bigger (and quicker) than expected.

So, the bar's been raised: new target — $2,500. Why stop now?

The last fundraiser I took part in was the Ration Challenge, where I raised $2,611.42 by living off a refugee ration pack for a week. That meant surviving on 420g rice, 170g lentils, 85g dried chickpeas, one 125g tin of sardines, one 400g can of kidney beans, and a splash of vegetable oil. That was it. For 7 days. No extras. Just hunger with purpose.

This time, I’m trading carbs for kilometres and I'm hoping to beat that fundraising total! Huge thanks to everyone who’s already jumped on — I seriously appreciate the support.

We’ve got a whole month to go.
Let’s see how far we can take this - both on the road and on the Pink Hearts Club scoreboard!

Hi Anthony, I am friend to your auntie Sodina. I witnessed her cancer journey and I can only agree with you how hard for people who are blessed without cancer to comprehend the pain and suffering of those who are affected by this disease. Their life takes a drastic turn overnight. Not to say emotionally is hard also financially is scary not knowing how to fund all the cost associated to the treatments. I am encouraging everyone to take a few minutes to think if this happens to my loved ones how would I feel? I am sending my love and prayer to your aunty and everyone for a quick recovery.

This means so much more knowing that you are doing it in honour of this beautiful, strong woman! I support this, however the runner in me frowns a little at this hefty mileage increase. So, this is my pledge. I donate $58 now, and another $58 if you get through the month injury free. Mileage nonwithstanding.
