Support my challenge to step up to breast cancer!
We all undoubtably share a common experience where we ourselves or someone we know, be it family, friends, or a work colleague has or is having to face and deal with the nasty “C” word.
My cancer experiences is not with me directly, but with my Mum, Sharon, not just once, but 3 times!
Mum was initially diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 1999. Initial biopsy results confirmed that it was cancerous, so Mum had to have a unilateral mastectomy. Lab results after surgery confirmed it had spread to her lymph nodes, so was then followed up with some aggressive Chemotherapy. Luckily for Mum, Doctors were very confident that from all action taken, Mum was cleared of cancer, and with no signs of it returning 5 years on, she was officially in remission around 2005.
Fast forward 9 years to 2014 and at an annual check-up, a lump was found. After minor surgery of a lumpectomy, tests confirmed it to be cancerous, again. However, this one was caught very early on so Mum only required a short course of radiotherapy treatment.
Fast forward another 6 years to 2020, and yep, it was back! Mum decided enough was enough, so like the first time around she opted for another unilateral mastectomy, so it had no chance to ever return.
With that being shared, I feel that all kinds of Cancer Foundations are important, but to my family and I, for obvious reasons, we feel passionate about supporting the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Right now, 58 people in Australia are diagnosed with breast cancer every day.
This August, I am taking part in Step Up to Breast Cancer for the mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and loves ones who are impacted by this devastating disease.
I am doing this to raise funds for National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to support vital breast cancer research to help save lives.
