“I'm sorry, you have cancer."
Five words. That's all it takes for your entire world to stop.
Every single day, 58 Australians hear those words, for breast cancer alone. Behind each diagnosis is a life forever changed… a partner, a parent, a friend, a child, watching on helplessly.
You’re told the stage.Â
You hope.. beg.. that it hasn’t spread.
You’re handed treatment options: chemo, surgery, radiation.Â
Maybe they’ll work.Â
Maybe they won’t.
You prepare to lose your hair, your energy, your breasts.
You cling to hope, but you're never the same again.
I know this story too well.
Every woman on my mother’s side has faced breast cancer. Many have lost the battle. I carry a gene which increases my risk, and every day I wonder not if, but when? I was 15 when my mum was first diagnosed. My sister was 11. We’d only just said goodbye to our nanna a couple of years prior due to breast cancer. We watched mum endure, brave but broken, and for a while, she survived. Then came the phone call years later… it was back.
Now I have two little boys of my own. I’m terrified. Not just for me, but for them. Because breast cancer doesn’t only take lives, it takes childhoods, it takes peace, it leaves fear behind like an echo that never stops.
That’s why I’m walking this month… to raise money, raise awareness, and to fight for a future where no one else has to live with this shadow. Every step is for my mum, for my boys, and for every woman who has ever had to hear those five devastating words. This August I’ve stepped up to conquer 58kms to support breast cancer research and save lives. Please donate, anything is something and it will help!
