Matt's Big Hike!
So here goes, I’m setting out to hike Everest Base Camp in November with one of my best mates and a goal to raise $10,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation in honour of my sister (Fearn) and mum (Helen) who are both battling breast cancer.
I must also pay tribute to the other women in my family who have battled this disease, Pam (grandmother), Merril (grandmother) and Jenni (Aunt).
For those that don’t know me, I’m Matt, I live in the beautiful Gold Coast and I like tackling things head on, it’s kind of the only way I know how. Here’s a little story of ‘WHY’.
I’ve wanted to hike Mount Everest ever since I was a little kid, my Dad showed me film photos of him and his brother in Nepal, it looked magical. White capped peaks, remote landscapes and joyous people. Since then, the idea has stuck, hike to Everest Base Camp and gaze at the tallest Mountain in the world. This is MY CHALLENGE.
Rewind 11 months to September 2025, my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 25. Shock, disbelief and that sick feeling in your gut was how I felt at the time. My sister has to be the bravest person I know, hands down. Since then, Fearn’s journey has faced numerous chemo sessions, surgery and now radiation therapy. What a trooper!
Throughout this process I haven’t been able to shake a sense of guilt and helplessness. One, because I live interstate to my family and two because all of the support in the world never quite feels enough when facing such a task. In short, I wasn’t sure how I could help best but felt I could do more.
Fast forward to June 2026 and my mum, Helen, the ultimate rock of the family was also diagnosed with breast cancer and has since undergone surgery. To be honest, the last year has been tough. But both my sister and mum are fighting, so I thought I’d join them.
Stick with me here. I’m not sharing this story for any sort of sympathy, quite the opposite. I’m sharing this to inspire. To resonate with people in times of hardship, friends and family who don’t know what to say, doctors, nurses and researchers doing the work and to the loved ones who are the ultimate heroes.
The goal: Hike to Everest Base Camp and raise as much money as I can to fund breast cancer research. Having consulted both my sister and mum they agreed they would like all proceeds to be given to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
In the hope to hit $10,000 my math was simple. Through their story can I inspire 500 people to donate $20 bucks to help find a cure for breast cancer?
