Right now, 57 Australians are diagnosed with breast cancer every day.
This August, I am taking part in Step Up to Breast Cancer for the mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and loves ones who are impacted by this devastating disease.
I am doing this to raise funds for National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to support vital breast cancer research to help save lives.

Wednesday 7th Aug On January 16th 2024, our lives were forever changed when we received news I had been diagnosed with HER2 positive breast cancer. At the time I was 31-weeks pregnant, and we’d been busy and preoccupied preparing for the arrival of a new baby. I’d had a bad feeling throughout my entire second pregnancy and was fortunate enough to have an extremely thorough GP who leaned into and trusted my intuition, sending me for a breast ultrasound which led to a biopsy, confirming breast cancer. On January 17th, the day following word of the diagnosis we met a breast surgeon, oncologist and our breast care nurses who over the last 6-months have become our closest support and biggest cheerleaders. Just a week after being diagnosed, at 32-weeks pregnant I received my first dose of a targeted cancer treatment called Herceptin. The following week I delivered our little girl by cesarean section at 33+1 weeks. Vivi spent 28 days in NICU / special care and during this time, whilst no longer pregnant I was able to complete my diagnosis undergoing a mammogram, PET scan and MRI. I had a portacath put in under twilight surgery and started chemotherapy on February 14th. The chemotherapy caused the early onset of menopause and I was given additional drugs to keep me in menopause to stop the cancer spreading. On May 29th I completed my 6th and final round of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy. I moved to have a bilateral mastectomy and sentinel node biopsy on July 5th and during the same surgery, I started the process of breast reconstruction. The pathology from the mastectomy revealed that there were still some remaining cancer cells and therefore, it was decided that I should undertake an additional 14 x rounds (10-months) worth of a targeted cancer drug combined with chemotherapy. I won’t complete the targeted treatment until June 2025 and will need more surgery in January to finalise my reconstruction. In spite of what has been an incredibly taxing treatment journey, with more ahead I feel so very grateful that my cancer was found relatively early and that I have responded to treatment. Around 3,200 women will die this year in Australia at the hands of this illness. I am sharing my story to help raise funds to fight this terrible disease.
