I did it - 300km

Of course the big hill came at the end of the day when fatigue, sore feet and that just get me to the hut feeling had truly set in. The last 1 and a bit kilometres of a 19km roller coaster day saved for the 166 vertical metre challenge… and it wasn’t going down. 2400 sweaty steps of huff and puff lugging the 18kg Ef-a-lump on my back up this slippery clay-ie, blackberry covered, mammoth hill. But, halfway up, without celebration or cheer, I completed my 300km target I set myself for this challenge. The photo is of me and my hiking buddy around the 300km mark feeling rather exhausted and ready for the day to end.

200km of walking achieved

Yesterday, I hit the 200km mark by walking into Pemberton in the sodden rain. At least this time it wasn’t windy as well. The walking days are getting longer- the next 7 days are around 20km each. The hiker hurt (sore feet) along with hiker hobble (can’t walk after arrival at destination) and hiker hunger has set in big time. But, still enjoying being out in nature and facing the simple things of life.

A little hairy on the wild west coast

One expects rain and cold when they go hiking in winter but today was the best blast Antarctica could send our way. She still hasn’t relented. We only had 12 ish Km to walk today after skipping the non-existent Mazzoletti Beach. High tide and a stormy southerly ocean made short work of that beach. Leaving Paarys wasn’t too bad. a few showers and strong breezes. Then the fun began. Gusty gales and lots of hale belted us at regular intervals. on the exposed ridge lines high above the ocean, we had to get low and maintain four points of contact while one such gale passed. The way we were being pushed around while walking looked like we had drunk a few. The scenery though, oh so stunning. The storm rages on around us but I’m tucked up safe and sound feeling rather toasty, although the feels like temp is below 2 degrees, at a Bibb Track hut. That was one crazy 12km that I won’t forget in a hurry.
