Cupcakes for Breast Cancer

This is my sister Nyries Story…

Nyrie was a much loved and respected teacher who worked throughout the Mackay District. Her kindness, enthusiasm and positivity defined the wonderful person that she was.

After trying for many years to have a second baby and turning to IVF, Nyrie and Wayde were elated to learn that they were pregnant with twins. Twenty Eight weeks into her Pregnancy Nyrie discovered a lump in her breast and learned that she had Stage 4 Breast Cancer (the most aggressive form).

Nyrie underwent initial surgery to remove some of the cancer however needed further surgery once the babies are born and then commenced Chemotherapy and Radium treatments. Two healthy twins, were delivered at 32 weeks gestation and were admitted straight to the special care nursery, and remained there for several weeks to receive their own specialised care.  Nyrie was unable to touch her babies whilst was undergoing her cancer treatment.

Time went by and Nyrie finished her chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and was considered in remission after some time. Life slowly returned to somewhat normal, but now with the constant thought of the cancer returning in the back of her mind. 5years on Nyrie started noticing her sternum aching, and returned to the drs to access. With some nagging she managed to have a PET scan, which then revealed the cancer had returned, and was now in her bones.

Nyrie returned to the care of her oncologist, and again went through chemotherapy and radiation treatments. However, within a year the cancer spread to her other organs. On the 7^th of July 2017, when Nyrie was just 43, she passed away peacefully with her husband and children at her bedside. Her oldest son was 10 years old, and the twins were 4 years old.
