Periodontal disease is linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, particularly for postmenopausal women and former smokers. With some studies showing a 12-14% higher overall risk. The leading theory suggests that chronic inflammation from gum disease, as well as specific bacteria, may spread through the bloodstream, affecting other parts of the body, including the breast tissue and promoting cancer development.
