My 57 Squat Challenge for breast cancer research

I am one of the 57 Australians that has or will be diagnosed with breast cancer today and a further 9 will lose their life.  (You can read my lived experience in the post below).  Naturally, I wanted to make a difference to the lives of those 57 Australians impacted by the disease - that is why I am taking on the 57 Squat Challenge to raise vital funds for world-class breast cancer research.

Please support my squat challenge to save lives and make a difference.

Every donation, big or small, will get me closer to reaching my goal and helping the National Breast Cancer Foundation end deaths from breast cancer.

My Journey

Thursday 29th Feb
As some of you know, my Mother survived a very aggressive form of Breast Cancer 21 years ago, and on Oct 24 2019 we lost my dear cousin and closest lifetime friend, Jeonna to an 8 year battle with Metastatic Breast Cancer.

This time last year after a routine Mammogram, I was diagnosed with early stages of a high grade and invasive type of Breast Cancer. I also tested positive for the BRCA1 gene. It all hit hard and fast, one of my biggest fears was quickly evolving into my new reality.

Shortly after my diagnosis I endured the following 5 surgeries in succession within 5 months:

- 2 x Lumpectomies (within 7 days)
- Bilateral Mastectomies
- Laparoscopic Oophorectomy
- Breast Reconstruction

Thankfully, as I chose to proceed with the prophylactic surgeries, no further treatment of chemotherapy or radiotherapy was necessary, in the hope of preventing any future return of cancerous cells. My last surgery was on 31 August, recovery was long, exhausting and hard after all the surgeries, anaesthetic and medication. After almost a year of feeling like a stranger in my own body, I am finally feeling more and more like my usual fully functioning self just now, one year on.

First and foremost, I must give thanks to my wonderful team of medical experts:

BreastScreen Queensland (Indooroopilly & Chermside) - thank you for the free life saving care and service that you offer to the millions of women in Australia
https://www.breastscreen.qld.gov.au/

The Wesley Breast Clinic - thanks to your beautiful staff who have provided so much care, kindness and reassurance over the many years, especially the last one

Dr Kate Stringer for your medical expertise, careful consideration, excellent care and determination to rid my body of all the cancerous cells
https://bbesurg.com.au/dr-kate-stringer

Dr Diana Kennedy for your beautiful and excellent work in building me back up and making me feel 'whole' again

Dr Melissa Buttini my long time Gynaecologist for your wonderful care and on-going medical advice

The excellent care I received from both the Wesley & especially the Mater Private nursing staff for making me feel so comfortable during my 10 night stay

BCNA Upfront Podcast for this very informative and comforting service you provide, it has certainly put my mind at ease, I HIGHLY recommend you listen if you or a loved one receives a breast cancer diagnosis

Mandy Goodyear at Fiveways Physiotherapy for giving me the confidence to start moving slowly and safely again
http://taringaphysiotherapy.com.au/our_team.htm

Michelle Pocknee for your wonderful healing hands and bio electric massage therapy, this helped tremendously for lymphatic drainage, and to break down my intense cording and help reduce scarring https://www.iahp.com/michelepock

So much gratitude to all my visitors, well wishers, gift givers and supporters cheering me on from the sidelines!  I feel so blessed to be surrounded by such a deeply loving family and community.

My deepest gratitude goes to...

Steven, my wonderful supportive husband, for taking such excellent care of me, when everything became too hard, when I felt the crushing weight of fear and anxiety take over me, for being my eyes and ears at every medical appointment and most importantly for keeping our family unit tight and strong while we endured this nightmare together. I don't know how I could have possibly survived this without you.

Jocelyn, my dear sweet Mama for picking up on all the things when I couldn't, and for all that you continue to do for our family, always. Having you living with us really is the greatest gift, we never have to ask, you always just intuitively know how and when to support us. Thank you for always being available, especially during this time when we needed you the most.

My Family and my enormous extended family for your endless love and light, thank you for always being there and all of your prayers.

The most wonderful community of friends, my Village People;- Natalie & Bill, Meryn & Tim, Tiffany & Chris for caring so well for our dear sweet Bonnie without hesitation during all those hospital stays. The countless times you cared for our daughter will forever be etched in my heart. Also LK & Archie for your super healing goodies & tonics!

All of my amazing students, thank you for sticking with me, I feel so deeply honoured and privileged to be your teacher. Thank you for all the care and understanding when I couldn't be there to teach you, and for the beautiful teachers who covered my classes.

To my wonderful team at Tourism & Events Queensland for showing up when I literally couldn't, for picking up where I left off time and time again, you are the most amazing bunch of women I have ever worked with, all so busy in your own careers and families, but always super supportive and willing to jump in when required.

In the past 10 years, breast cancer diagnoses in Australia have increased by 21%. 57 women in Australia alone are diagnosed with breast cancer every day and devastatingly 9 women lose their lives to this dreaded disease. Funding world-class breast cancer research is more important than ever if we want to end deaths from breast cancer. I am sharing my story because I feel the call to raise awareness, I am so surprised to learn how many women aren't screening.
