Support my Pink Ribbon Breakfast event

1 in 7 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, 56 Australians everyday. Yet you still don’t expect it to happen to you or a loved one. 

Last year my Mum was one of the 1 in 7 being diagnosed with breast cancer.  My Mums breast cancer was “triple negative” an aggressive and invasive subtype of breast cancer with less treatment options available. Mum could not feel the lump in her breast and if it weren’t for the routine mammograms that women aged 50+ have free access to, her cancer would not have been found so early.

Despite early detection Mums treatment was long, physically, mentally and emotionally demanding and she will continue to have longterm side effects from it. It is difficult to think about how different Mums story could have been if her cancer was detected any later. 

Following Mums diagnosis, genetic testing showed she carries the BRCA2 gene. This gene greatly increases your chance of breast and ovarian cancer and my sister recently tested positive for this too. 

After this past year I can’t help but feel eternally grateful for where medicine is now days. Now that we know about the BRCA2 gene, Mum and Heather have access to extra testing and further preventative options. Knowledge like this is power and it is saving lives everyday.

Now I want to do whatever small part I can to support Mum, Heather and the amazing research that has helped our family so much over the past year. My goal is to raise $1000 for the Pink Ribbon Foundation to fund research that will prevent, detect, stop and treat the progression and recurrence of breast cancer.
