Working in a surgical ward we see patients from all walks of life battling breast cancer - the beautiful lady who trained me up for my role, recently lost her fight. And boy did she fight!! This wall is dedicated to our patients, our colleagues and on a personal level my grandmother who died when I was 4. To all these brave warriors!! We’re lucky to live in the best country in the world where we have access to all sorts of support and resources. My grandmother didn’t so I done this in her honor every year and am so proud that Westmead Private Hospital supports this cause as well.

I was diagnose with stage 3 breast cancer in July 2022. It came as a huge surprise as there is no breast cancer in our family history. While the mastectomy and reconstruction, together with radiation were tough, the after effects of medication for 5+ years and the damage caused by radiation and chemo are longer term, and really challenging some days. I am blessed to have an incredibly supportive husband, my cancer buddies (cancer survivors), daughters and supportive friends. Give generously whatever you can because every $ makes a difference.
Sarah
It is so important to know your breasts, any little changes go to a GP the next day, don’t put it off, don’t think it’s nothing, don’t think I’m too busy - this decision could save your life! It saved mine. Early detection can make a huge difference 💖
Meghan Partridge
I am 33 years old. On the 22nd of October 2024, I was diagnosed with Grade 3 aggressive breast cancer. My cancer was hormone-driven and therefore because I hadn’t had children yet, I needed to firstly undergo IVF treatment for 3 weeks before beginning chemotherapy treatment. I then started chemotherapy on the 25th November 2024, receiving double-strength doses every fortnight on the Friday, whilst also using a cold cap to help prevent hair loss during treatment. After four rounds of double doses, I had a full body scan and this showed the treatment was working and the 6.5cm tumour was shrinking. The decision was made to change the treatment sessions to weekly and single doses. This continued for a further 5 months, whilst I also maintained utilising the cold cap to retain as much hair as possible, this became harder to use as my hair lessened. I struggled with the physical changes that my body was going through; losing my hair, gaining weight and the side effects that came with the medications and chemotherapy. This heavily impacted on my emotional well being, to overcome and cope with these all changes. Once I completed chemotherapy in early March 2025, I had a 6 week gap of no treatment to allow my body to recover before surgery. I had the surgery to remove my breast and lymph nodes in April. After 6 weeks I returned to work and then had to start radiation treatment for three weeks, every night after work. Following radiation treatment, a scan revealed that the cancer had spread to my lungs, meaning I now need ongoing medication for the rest of my life, to minimise its growth. It is now my new normal, this includes monthly injections to put my ovaries on hold rather than removing them and everyday medication called hormone blockers. To maintain some normality and control of my life, I continued to work and study at University throughout all my treatments. This was very important to me to continue, prove determination and achieve my goals.

Each year, our ward comes together nurses, doctors, management, and staff across the hospital baking treats, making craft items, and creating raffle hampers from our own pockets, all with one goal: to raise vital funds for breast cancer research. Nanny Sandra 21/5/1944 - 13/1/1996 "I won't be there to see her grow up" Was my Nans heartbreaking answer to "what's wrong?" whilst tears ran down her face after we had been giggling to each other. She was the first person I giggled with at almost 4 months old.. I don't remember her voice but these words play on repeat in my head everyday. My Nan is my guardian angel. She has proved this many times, she is watching over all of us and keeping us safe.. I feel her presence, I feel her support and there is no doubt that when I do stupid things she's either shaking her head or laughing her arse off! I wish we had more time together.. that we got the chance to have more photos and memories shared and that you got to watch me grow up from down here. I only hope you're proud of who I am or at least who I am trying to be 🩷 I love you Nan x
