I'M SWIMMING FOR Jin

A few short months after Romi was born, we found out that my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer. Itโ€™s been devastating learning how to be a mum for the first time, while worrying for my own mums life. The mother-daughter relationship can be so complicated and layered emotionally, especially when you add cultural and language differences and clashes, but there is no other love like it. There is a depth and understanding between women that canโ€™t be replicated in other types of relationships. It has been so beautiful seeing the effort she made before the diagnosis, til now, with my daughter. Their bond is so strong, Romi just loves her laolao so much. I hope my mum can live a long life, so she can enjoy her grandchild and future grandchildren. She deserves this happiness in life so much, and she wants to be here, for her children and for Romi. I feel itโ€™s only just the beginning for her, despite being 68 years of age. Itโ€™s been a new journey for her since Romiโ€™s birth and we want her around for years to come. So, though much is out of my control, Iโ€™ve decided that I will participate in this challenge to raise money for breast cancer research. The road to my mums diagnosis wasnโ€™t straight forward, from being told at first by her GP it was โ€œprobably menopauseโ€, later an infection and being prescribed antibiotics twice to no avail, wasting valuable time. Even after diagnosis, itโ€™s been a couple of months before she was booked in for surgery. I am sure she is not alone in her experience. 9 women die from breast cancer every day, but thereโ€™s only one breast cancer surgeon at her hospital, leaving a long wait list for those in the public system. In fact, her breast cancer clinic is only open for 3 hours, on one day a week, which makes appointments a slow and arduous process for something so serious and scary. While I believe that in many ways we have access to exceptional free healthcare in Australia, there are still many gaps, and any small donation can contribute to closing those gaps, whether my mum benefits, or more likely another woman in the future will, I believe that every dollar that goes to extremely important cause will help.

Support my challenge to swim for breast cancer!

9 people in Australia die from breast cancer every single day.

This November, I am taking part in Swim For Breast Cancer for the mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and loves ones who are impacted by this devastating disease.

I am doing this to raise funds for National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to support vital breast cancer research to help save lives.

Please make a donation to support my challenge.ย

Thank you for your support.
