My Updates

A third of the way in - every rep counts, and every dollar counts

Thursday 12th Mar
Up early this morning and rather than squatting, I’m reflecting on how breast cancer survival rates have radically increased over the past 30 years.  When I was 12, a close family friend passed away from breast cancer, the first person I knew who had it. My own daughter was about to turn 12 when I was diagnosed. The differences in our outcomes track long term trends - I’d rather talk about survival but the medicine uses mortality rates - and it shows a decline in breast cancer mortality of about 40% in countries like Australia.

Due to early detection through programs like BreastScreen (early detection also means higher cancer incidences). Due to significant advances in treatment. Due to better awareness of the importance of modifiable lifestyle factors… like exercise, right!

Which brings me back to the squats, which I’ll start again just as soon as I finish this post, I promise…  I’m so proud to be part of this Squat Challenge, supporting the work of the NBCF to get to Zero Deaths from breast cancer.

So, here we are a third of the way in, Please consider donating, if you are in a position to, and you haven’t already. Today donations will be doubled from midday!

Mixing it up with some deadlifts

Monday 9th Mar

Mixing it up

Monday 9th Mar
Happy IWD to all the strong women and femme people out there! Today I decided to mix up some deadlifts in with my squats. Another large muscle group being activated along with the core. I started at bar weight, added 10 kg, then another 10 kg.  Very enjoyable. It was thankfully less humid than it has been and that made it easy to get the count done. I’m feeling now in the rhythm with all the squats and I can see my quads responding. Feels great.

500 SQUATS IN AND NEARLY $4k RAISED!

Wednesday 4th Mar
Off to a flying start with the fundraising thanks to a very generous donation from an anonymous donor who made a single large donation of nearly $2500! I genuinely have no idea who you are and I am so grateful for your care and generosity.
Also off to a very fun and inspirational start start squatting with my cousin at the Dragon Boat racing in Sydney on the weekend! Her crew, the Dragons Abreast, are a survivor crew.  Lovely to see you Lyn and Jen.   Aaaand basically just squatting anywhere cos when you’re doing 168 a day you’ve got to bust them out when you can!
I’m feeling great so far … but conscious there’s a long way to go!

WHY I’M DOING 5000 SQUATS IN MARCH!

Saturday 21st Feb

I’m Miranda and I’m a breast cancer survivor.  I’m lucky - through early surveillance because of a family history, my cancer was found and removed early. It was emotionally very tough - especially the uncertainty - but I never actually felt sick and so many people, friends and family, showed up for me.

I always liked squats, but I only started weights after diagnosis - working out became a way of letting off steam, changing my headspace as I dealt with the stress and uncertainty. Now, exercising with friends and getting out into the sunshine is still my best way for dealing with all the curveballs life throws.

Three  years after cancer, I LOVE the NBCF’s Squat Challenge because it is for everyone - survivors and supporters. We all can get fitter, we can all get those squats lower, and best of all we can get closer to the goal of zero deaths from breast cancer.

Please consider join my journey by making a donation to the NBCF or joining my team, Queens of the Squat Age!

Every squat gets us closer to where we want to be - zero deaths from breast cancer. So, every rep counts. Every dollar helps.  And squatting is incredibly good for you. Get low!
