Pink Ribbon Breakfast

This year, I am hosting a Pink Ribbon Breakfast event because I want to make a real difference to Australians affected by breast cancer. All donations made to this page will help do exactly that.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is Australia's leading not-for-profit organisation funding world-class breast cancer research towards a vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer.

I believe world-class research is the best way to prevent deaths from breast cancer and can improve how breast cancer is diagnosed, managed, and treated.

Click 'Donate' to make a secure online donation and help me reach my goal. Every donation, big or small, will help me get there. Please donate today.

All donations over $2 are tax deductible and you will be issued with a tax-deductible receipt via email as soon as you make your donation.

NBCF has one vision - Zero Deaths from breast cancer. Together we can help them get there.

Thank you so much for your support!

Yesterday was my 8th Chemo infusion, that was a halfway mark, not in weeks, but in infusions. I still have a long way to go in my journey but felt like it was a good milestone.

In this post, I wish to ask my female friends and colleagues to learn how to self-check and recognize the signs via the images I share in this Blog. I ask please book an ultrasound and mammogram, especially if you have a family history of Breast cancer and/or are over 40. I would like to share my story for awareness.

Last October, when I arrived back to Sydney from seeing a dear friend dying of Cancer in NZ, I decided to get several health checks, including a Breast ultrasound and mammogram. The radiographer kept going over a spot on my left breast (now my cancer lump) with the ultrasound, asking me if it hurt. She was very careful to place my left breast correctly during the mammogram to get the images, I left thinking, oh no, she has found something.

Shortly after, I received the results from my local GP. It was listed as a complex cyst amongst a list of many other breast cysts. I was told, nothing to worry about, some women have breast cysts. At my next visit, still concerned, I asked, if should I see a breast specialist, again I was told no, nothing to worry about.

Months later, when I felt my lump, which was a good size, I thought, oh, it's just a cyst. About a month later, I visited the GP and asked for a referral to see a breast specialist to have it drained as it was quite large. The GP did not look or inspect it and said that if it is not bothering you, you can leave it! I said I wanted to get it drained and got a referral. I booked an appointment at the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse and when being inspected under ultrasound, I was told it was not a cyst and they immediately took biopsies. I was devastated, especially since it was detected 8 months ago and, in that time, it had tripled in size. A week later the results came back as triple-negative breast cancer.

I recently read an article about a woman who was also told repeatedly there was nothing to worry about, she is now stage 4 with 5 to 10 years to live. She has small children.

It is a good read emphasizing that women can request further testing and there is a perception that breast cancer occurs in older women. This is just not true, 1 in 7 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and around 1000 young women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, equivalent to 3 young women each day.

Please learn how to check your breasts and know the signs as per the images I have attached. Please, any friends over 40, get an ultrasound and mammogram.

Thank you for reading my story,
