Support my challenge to swim for breast cancer!

9 people in Australia die from breast cancer every single day.

This November, I am taking part in Swim For Breast Cancer for the mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and loves ones who are impacted by this devastating disease.

I am doing this to raise funds for National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to support vital breast cancer research to help save lives.

Please make a donation to support my challenge and let’s make a splash to save lives together!

Thank you for your support.

My Updates

There is a first for everything

Sunday 10th Nov
You might have noticed that I have only completed my first swim today and it is already the 10 November. That’s because I have a sore back and the doctors orders have been to rest. But it’s been a few weeks and the next step is to get my strength back and swimming is a perfect way to do this.

It was really hard to motivate myself to get out of the “protect my back” thinking. I’m tired from lazing about so much and even my standing endurance is low at the moment. I dragged myself to the aquatic centre this morning with the goal of 500m- take it slow and try not rotate my lower spine too much.

I don’t usually use equipment but this time I asked for a buoy and I started with arms only concentrating on keeping my spine in one place. It seemed to work well! I got a bit frustrated at having to go so slowly and using only my arms but eventually I told myself this is good for my body right now and I started enjoying it. I enjoyed it so much I smashed my goal of 500m and swam a satisfying 2km. Playing catch up for the days I’ve missed on this challenge already.

This mornings activities made me think about the cancer rehabilitation process. As an onco rehab therapist I advise my patients to exercise, often swimming. It helps recovery and fights fatigue. Today I had to use my own advice and it was hard to get going!! It was a first for me to have to adjust my speed and style, push through the fear of increased pain and fatigue. And I feel better for doing it. Plus I have an added appreciation for what cancer patients do throughout their treatment. Brave and strong.

Let’s begin!
