My Why: Doing the Squat Challenge in Memory of My Mum

Wednesday 4th Mar

Hello everyone,

For those who don’t know me, I wanted to share a little about why I’m part of the squat challenge this year, and why it means so much to me. My beautiful Mum ended her cancer journey in August 2025 💟

She was the strongest, bravest, toughest, most resilient, kind and forgiving woman, right up to her very last moment. Mum originally battled cervical cancer, which was then followed by secondary lung cancer. Over time it spread aggressively, taking over her body in shapes, lumps and forms that no one should ever have to endure 😔

Despite everything, Mum fought for over six years from the day she was first diagnosed. And in true “Mum style,” she didn’t just fight; she showed up. In 2023, when her body still allowed her movement, she chose to take part in this very squat challenge. That year I took her on a holiday to Thailand because she was starting to get noticeably sicker, and I wanted her to experience seeing elephants, something she had always dreamed of. On the day we’d booked to visit the Elephant Samui Sanctuary, she was so unwell that she couldn’t make it… but she still did her squats. 🐘

Every single day in Thailand, she showed up for this challenge. She squatted on the beach while her grandchildren ran around her, squatted at the resort reception on arrival and departure, squatted at the airport, even squatted with a cocktail in hand. No matter how sick she felt, she pushed through because she believed in supporting cancer research in any form she could. It was her way of giving back and standing with others on their own cancer journeys.

This year, I’m doing this challenge for her. To honour her strength, her spirit, and her endless determination. Every squat I do is for Mum, and for all the families walking the same heartbreaking path.

If sharing her story inspires even one person to donate, to participate, or simply to appreciate the moments they have with the people they love, then her legacy continues in the most beautiful way.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story, and thank you for the support - not just for me, but for what challenges like this represent! 💛

I love you Mum, to the moon and back, and again, and again, and forever xxx
