This June, I’m shaving my head for someone who has been fighting breast cancer for ten years — a whole decade of courage, pain, hope, heartbreak, and unbelievable strength. I’m doing it for Colleen Gillard.
Colleen’s story began in November 2016, when she was just 33. One lump. One phone call. One moment that shattered the world she knew. What followed was surgery after surgery, chemo, radiation, reconstruction, and pain that never really left. But she survived. She kept going. She lived.
And now, this November marks ten years since that first diagnosis — ten years that she, and her family, have been fighting this disease.
In March 2024, she was told the words no one ever wants to hear: “It’s metastatic. It’s in your liver.”
There is no cure for metastatic breast cancer. But there is resilience. There is hope. And there is Colleen.
She joined a clinical trial. Endured brutal side effects. Watched the cancer shrink. When the cancer outsmarted the treatment, she didn’t break — she found another trial. Another chance. Another fight.
Now, after six rounds of chemo in the MK‑2870 clinical trial, her scans show the cancer is shrinking again. She keeps showing up. She keeps laughing. She keeps living. She keeps fighting — ten years on.
But chemo takes things from you. It takes your strength. Your comfort. Your energy. And eventually, it takes your hair — the moment the world can see your battle.
So I’m shaving my head for her. Because after ten years of fighting, she shouldn’t have to face this part alone. Because when her hair falls out, I want her to look at me and know: I’m right here. I see you. I honour you. I’m walking beside you.
This fundraiser isn’t just about money — though the research it supports is life‑saving and desperately needed. This is about love. About solidarity. About showing up for someone who has shown unimaginable strength for a decade.
