In early 2024, I noticed a lump and, like many mums, I brushed it off — assuming it was just something related to breastfeeding. Life was busy, and I delayed getting it checked.
Eventually, I went in. I got an ultrasound and everything looked okay.
A few months passed by and the lump was getting bigger and painful. At this point I had stopped breastfeeding for a few months and was starting to wonder why the lump wasn’t going away... I went back in.
That decision led to an early-stage breast cancer diagnosis. It was the most surreal day of my life and the cause of many sleepless nights that followed. The fear of not being here for my 3 beautiful children shook me to my core. I was prepared to do anything to reduce my chances of it getting worse or ever being in this situation again.
Since then, I’ve been through a double mastectomy and the long, emotional road of treatment decisions and recovery. Today, I’m incredibly grateful to say: I am healthy.
I’m sharing this because I know how easy it is to ignore the signs or to hope something will just resolve on its own — especially when you’re caring for others. But early detection meant my experience with breast cancer was minimized.
Please: check your breasts. Schedule your mammogram. Trust your instincts.
And if you’re able, consider donating to breast cancer research or organizations that support patients and families through this journey.
My goal of raising $500 can support a researcher to understand the best approach to manage breast cancer and prevent it from recurring.
We don’t always know what’s ahead — but we can take steps that truly matter.
