Marathon for Mum

By Cameron Natt

Hello friends and family!

3 months ago, my mother Sally was diagnosed with grade 2 breast cancer. With no significant family history of cancer and always maintaining excellent fitness and health, the diagnosis was unexpected.

She is currently undergoing chemotherapy, an invasive treatment that targets both cancer cells and healthy cells. Consequently, she is suffering from moderate side effects, such as nausea, fatigue, and hair loss.

Putting things into perspective however, it is expected that more than 20,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year in Australia alone, with a further 3000 people losing their lives. This is simply not acceptable.

To help battle this intimidating illness, I will be running the Barossa Marathon on May 30th to help raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. All donations are going directly towards the National Breast Cancer Foundation who aim for zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.

Please click 'Donate' to make a donation to help beat Breast Cancer.

Thank you so much for your support,

Cam

Marathon Complete!

Tuesday 15th Jun
We did it!!!

2 weeks ago was the big day, and I ran my first ever Marathon! It was a stunning day, with a clear cold day paving the day for an unforgettable experience.

Everything went to plan; I kept a consistent pace, feeding/drinking went smoothly and I never had any soreness/niggles. I also was fortunate enough to have a sizable support crew cheering me on the whole way (thank you so much team!!!).

However, the highlight was certainly crossing the finish line and embracing my mum just seconds afterwards. I'll remember and cherish that moment forever.

For those interested in the numbers:
Time: 3:26:11
Avg. Pace: 4:53/km
Avg, HR: 175 bpm
Max HR: 195 bpm
Calories Burned: 3,128 Cal

This will be my last post, and I would like to finish by saying thank you so much to all of you for donating and reading about my my journey to raise awareness about breast cancer research. We smashed the original goal of $1000 and I couldn't be more proud.

Mental Training

Wednesday 19th May
Almost at $5,000, thank you so much everyone!!!

This week I began my taper towards race day, with the duration and intensity of each workout gradually decreasing as May 30th approaches.

However, its not all about the physical training. In fact, I would argue that the physical training has a lesser effect on performance than its counterpart, mental training.

Recently I have been reading Ross Edgley's book "The Art of Resilience", in which he details his learnings leading up to and during his 1,792 mile swim around Great Brittan (yes I agree, he is crazy). However, I have taken away a number of concepts that he discusses throughout his book.

In particular, the Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and understanding the power of a higher purpose (Look it up if you're interested). Going through this journey with mum to date has been a powerful one and has given a new sense of purpose to this race. I will keep this Hierarchy of Needs concept in mind when finding strength when suffering come race day.

Until then, I have a few more key sessions ahead; some 1k intervals, a tempo run and a 16k run with some strides!

Thanks again everyone, you all rock!

Running Training

Monday 10th May
Last week I completed what will be my longest training run in the lead up to the full 42.2km in just under 3 weeks (not long now!!). It served as a dry run (pun intended) and was as much a confidence booster as it was a normal training run.

I didn't want this effort to be an all out effort, and focus more on my routine leading up to and during the run. This included what I was eating and drinking 48 hours before hand, when I would wake up and my nutrition and hydration throughout the run itself.

It was a great success, running from Brighton to Glenelg and back 3 times for a total of 35km.  I had no niggles or bad pains and my pace was not far from my target race pace.
Thankyou to Brooke who was there to support me throughout the run :)

P.S. Happy Birthday mum for last Saturday (May 8th)!!
P.P.S. Happy Mothers day for yesterday!!
P.P.P.S. Happy wedding anniversary for last Friday (May 7th)!!

Fundraiser kickoff

Saturday 1st May
Last Thursday, 29th April, a group of friends got together to kickstart this fundraiser at the Adelaide UniBar. 4 brave young men got up in front of a crowd and had their heads shaved to help raise awareness and kickstart donations.

Mum and I were blown away by the support on the night as we smashed the original donation target, and managed to raise over $3000 in just 48 hours!

Thank you Sam (pictured), Rijul, Maui and Jordan were brave enough to shave, as well as all of you who have donated so far!
This is just the beginning, and expect the next few posts to be about running!

Thanks, Cam
