THE STATS
This is what we are up against
In the past 10 years, breast cancer diagnoses in Australia have increased by 21%. Each day 57 people in Australia are diagnosed with breast cancer and 9 people lose their lives to this disease. Funding world-class breast cancer research is more important then ever if we want to end deaths from breast cancer.
Where your money goes
By completing the 57 Squat Challenge and raising funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), you're supporting world-class breast cancer research to better understand how to prevent and detect breast cancer early, how to stop the progression and recurrence of breast cancer, how to effectively treat hard-to-treat and metastatic breast cancers and ultimately - save lives. The more we raise, the more research we can fund.
Meet some of our NBCF-funded researchers who are helping us work towards our vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer.
Associate Professor Pilar Blanchard
UNIVERSITY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Project name: Targeting a new ‘hidden’ aggressive subtype of estrogen receptor positive breast cancer
“We believe there are subtypes of breast cancer that resist treatment and this grant is about targeting an oncogene which when expressed, provides survival to anti-oestrogens in a subtype of hormone-positive breast cancer.”
Associate Professor Kara Britt
Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
Project name: Targeting the Immune System to Prevent Breast Cancer
NBCF supported researcher, Dr Kara Britt decided to take up breast cancer research because of her mother.
“Unfortunately it was too late for my mum, and that was really hard, but I can save your sister, I can save your daughter or your grandmother. With your support I can continue this research and make sure that we one day will live in a world free of breast cancer.”

Associate Professor Peter Simpson
The University of Queensland
Project name: Understanding the causes of breast cancer in young women The University of Queensland
‘My research is focused on better understanding the mechanisms of breast cancer development and progression in young women. This is quite broad but the common theme through our research is the use of clinical specimens from patients who have generously consented to be involved in our research. The specific grant is focused on looking at the very early ‘molecular changes’ that happen in cells in the breast that give rise to breast cancer.’
