My Coast To Kosci Challenge

By Lisa Sherman

On 1 December 2023, I will be taking part in this year's Coast To Kosci Ultra Marathon, an iconic and unique race that involves running 240km from Eden on the South Coast to the summit of Kosciusko and then back to Charlotte Pass.

This will be the furtherest distance I have attempted and one that will challenge and test my limits. And this is why I run.

I want to see how far I can go and what I can achieve. I am intrigued and continually amazed at what the human body can do, we are capable of so much more than we initially believe or perceive. That I can push my body to reach new distances, push through tough times, pain, problem solve and test myself physically and mentally, and still enjoy the simple act of running from one point to another - this continues to drive me and fuels my why.

But for this challenge, I also want it to be more than just about me. I am committing to raise money for NBCF and world-class breast cancer research.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is Australia’s leading national body funding game-changing breast cancer research with money raised entirely by the Australian public.

I know far too many women who have been affected by breast cancer and I believe research is the best way to prevent deaths, and improve how breast cancer is diagnosed, managed and treated.

Click 'Donate' to make a secure online donation and help me reach my goal to raise at least $10 for every 1km I will run during Coast To Kosci.

Every donation, big or small, will help me get there. Please donate today.

All donations over $2 are tax deductible and you will be issued with a tax-deductible receipt via email as soon as you make your donation.

Thank you so much for your support!

My Updates

I DID IT!!

Wednesday 6th Dec
WOW! What an adventure C2K was! I can honestly say that was one of the most memorable and incredible running experiences I have had. I always knew it would be special but it completely exceeded my expectations.

We had numerous challenges due to weather, and for the first time the event had both an inclement start and inclement finish. The race directors had to make the courageous call during the race for it to finish at Charlotte's Pass (this is the 223km mark) as it was just too dangerous for us to summit Kosciusko at that point. Some runners earlier on were able to summit and I know that they faced some very tough conditions on that section.

There is so much to say about the race and yet I'm still finding it hard to put it all into words. For now, I want to send my heartfelt thanks to my incredible crew - aka the C2K Dream Team - of Grant, Mel and Cindy. Running is never an individual sport and that was never more apparent then during the race. Their commitment, kindness, encouragement and presence got me to the finish line - I could not have done it without them - thank you!

And to Mickey and Greg, race directors, and all of the incredible volunteers and race officials - you are all amazing and are what make this event the exceptional run that it is. Thank you!

And to each and everyone of you that donated to NBCF - a HUGE thank you! My original target was $2,500 and you helped to smash this out of the park! Every dollar absolutely helps to create a world where there is zero deaths from breast cancer. Thank you for being part of making this happen. Lis x

Eden here we come!

Thursday 30th Nov
And just like that race day is almost here! Was great to pack the car full of everything we need from running gear, mandatory gear (key for the summit section), nutrition and other 'must-haves' -luckily there was still room for us - and get on the road to Eden with Grant and Mel. It was a picturesque drive south from Sydney and we broke up the drive with a couple of stops including Ulladulla for lunch. We made it to Eden late afternoon in some rather wet and windy conditions...looks like we are in for a wet run but that's okay - we can't control the weather only how we respond to it. It's just another part of the challenge and I'm ready for whatever I need to face and overcome on Friday.

It is not possible to do a run like this without a support crew and I'm incredibly fortunate to have what I think of as the 'dream team' to help me through this challenge. My husband Grant, who has supported me on many a running challenge (and no doubt there will be many more in the future!) and Mel Warman and Cindy Brown - two amazing women who I have met through being a run leader with Boobs on the Run.

Mel founded Boobs on the Run over 9 years ago to help women to get moving and to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Our programs are aimed at getting women moving because we know that movement is medicine and as busy women who do everything, it's important to have some 'me time'.

I have been a run leader for Boobs on the Run for almost 4 years now and it is something I am incredibly proud of as it's not just about running. Running is actually the end result of what we do. It's the connection, connection, community and confidence you build all culminates in consistency across everything in your life and this is priceless.

I am incredibly grateful for all the support and donations received! Thank you! With 24hours to go to the start of the race and having almost reached my target of $2,500 - I have raised my fundraising target to $4,000. Please share with your friends and networks. Every dollar makes a difference.

3 weeks to go!

Friday 10th Nov
This is getting real! It's just 3 weeks to go until I'll be on the beach at Twofolds Bay about to take on my biggest challenge to date.

The last few weeks since Hume & Hovell have been spent logging lots of kms and focussing on my recovery, keeping my body well nourished and prioritising sleep.

Have also been in full planning mode with my support crew - Grant (aka Crew Chief), Mel and Cindy - to make sure we have all of the mandatory kit and everything else we will need throughout the 240km adventure. I have many lists on the go - I'm in my element LOL.

This weekend is the last of the big training runs with a 60km run on Sat 11 Nov and then 20km on Sun 12 Nov - then it's time to taper and freshen up the body and mind. I always find the taper a little hard as I'm used to doing a lot of activity but also know it's an incredibly important part of feeling fresh and well prepared on the start line.

A huge thank you to everyone that has donated to date - your support is very much appreciated and means a lot to me.

On the road to C2K...it's all in the training

Wednesday 18th Oct
It just over 6 weeks I will be on the start line at Eden.

The excitement is building as I work through logistics and in full planning mode with my awesome crew - Grant, Mel and Cindy (AKA Dream team crew).

I am also fully focussed on training, especially recovery. I recently completed a 100k training run in the Hume & Hovell Ultra which was a fantastic event. The local community, volunteers and an absolutely stunning location to run made this a very special run. My focus for this event was practicing using poles (and the art of eating whilst holding poles - not easy), trying one new aspect with my nutrition strategy, and getting more experience running in the bush at night.

I had a fantastic run and kept focussed on my goals. It was a great mental boost and confidence building run and even managed to come in 3rd female which was a bonus.

Importantly, my recovery from this event has been very good as I focussed on nutrition and sleep to restore both my mind and body ready to continue my training build for the next few weeks.

The countdown is well and truly on for C2K.

Thank you to my Supporters
