One year ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was incredibly lucky to have found it early and to have had access to world-class diagnostics and treatment.
Whilst waiting in my car for the call up to my daily radiation treatment, I made a list of what I wanted to achieve once I was physically and mentally ready and ‘out the other side’ – well, here I am now.
I have set myself a challenge to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) for world-class breast cancer research. The NBCF has set the ambitious goal of 'Zero Deaths by 2030'. This is incredibly important to me - no person should have to lose a loved one from this devastating disease. No mother, child, partner, or friend should have to live in fear of survival statistics. I want to play a role in changing the future for the better.
Anyone who knows me, knows I LOVE a good hike. So, this is a win/win for me - I get to go out and enjoy this amazing country of ours whilst contributing to something so close to me.
To raise money for NBCF I will be completing three hikes:
Sep: Light to Light hike, South Coast, 30km
Oct: Six Foot Track, Blue Mountains, 45km
Dec: Three Capes, Tasmania, 48km
The sobering fact is that 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. I believe research is the best way to prevent deaths, and improve how breast cancer is diagnosed, managed and treated.
All proceeds raised will go to the NBCF, Australia’s leading national body funding game-changing breast cancer research.
