Go PINK 2022!

Going PINK for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

I've decided to colour my hair PINK for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I have been cancer free for 4 years and want to raise money for more research. All donations made to this page will help do exactly that.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is Australia’s leading national body funding game-changing breast cancer research with money raised entirely by the Australian public.

I really believe research is the best way to prevent deaths, and improve how breast cancer is diagnosed, managed and treated. NBCF is working towards one goal: zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. Together we can help them get there.

Click 'Donate' to make a secure online donation and help me reach my goal. Every donation, big or small, will help me get there. Please donate today.

All donations over $2 are tax deductible and you will be issued with a tax-deductible receipt via email as soon as you make your donation.

Thank you so much for your support!

My Story

Wednesday 28th Sep
My Breast Cancer journey started on 21 August 2018 when my GP confirmed what was obvious, I had Breast Cancer! After being referred to a Breast Surgeon, there was a whirlwind of more blood tests, CT scans, MRIs, more biopsies before a treatment plan was decided on.

Off to surgery for a mastectomy of my left breast and inserting a tissue expander so that I could have a tram flap reconstruction after completing my treatment. I don't think anyone really prepares you for what you face after surgery, but taking it a day at a time was the best way for me.

Following on from my surgery recovery, which took a little longer than I would have thought. I didn't realise what was required to fill the tissue expander, I think if I had really know all the details I might have chosen a different path. Once recovered from the surgery, the chemo treatment started. This was 6 months of chemo, broken into 3 months of 3 weekly treatment and then a long 3 months of weekly visits to the hospistal. On the plus side, I got some free massage or accupuncture which was nice.

Most people say chemo is the worst part of their treatment, but for me it was the 25 sessions of radiation. It was 5 days a week for 5 weeks, but at least it was only for 10 minutes each day. It was tough and I say to many people, give me chemo any day!!

At the end of both the chemo and radiation cycles you get to ring a bell to signify you have made it, it is the best feeling. I was lucky to have a heap of family with me when I rang the bell at the end of the radiation as that was finally the end! We went out for a big dinner, with a cake to celebrate.

After relocating from Sydney (4 weeks after my last radiation session) to Brisbane, I picked back up with my reconstruction plans. However that was delayed thanks to two things, 1. waiting for a year post radiation and 2. COVID-19. It was the longest 2 years and towards the end the expander started giving me some discomfort, it was only meant to last a year at most.

Finally on 24 June 2021 I had my reconstruction surgery, which was a 13 hour operation, 2 weeks being lonely in hospital thanks to another COVID lock-down. I was very happy to have my daily visits from my surgeon. Recovery from reconstruction has been a bumpy road, but as I say to many people, I am hear living life and seeing my kids grow up.

Raising awareness about Breast Cancer is very important to me because EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES! By fundraising for Breast Cancer Research, I hope that they can maybe one day find a curer, if not at least find better ways to diagnose and treat people.
