Half for a half!
In August 2021 at 37 years-of-age, with two kids in tow (4 and 2 years) and halfway through an immunology PhD I was diagnosed with locally-advanced breast cancer. For 15 months I was in active treatment including pre-surgery chemotherapy, surgery (right mastectomy and axillary dissection), radiation and post-surgery chemotherapy. I’m now in chemically-induced menopause for the next 9 years.
In August 2023, two years from my diagnosis, me and my uniboob are running the Sunshine Coast half-marathon to raise: 1) awareness for young women with breast cancer, and 2) money for the NBCF and their world-class breast cancer research.
The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is Australia’s leading national body funding game-changing breast cancer research with money raised entirely by the Australian public.
I believe research is the best way to prevent deaths, and improve how breast cancer is diagnosed, managed and treated. I have friends (yes, multiple!) under 40 years-of-age living with incurable triple-negative breast cancer. They need more!
The breast cancer subset I was diagnosed with had multiple treatment options - due completely to advances in science and medical research. I’m very grateful for this. I’m still struggling mentally, emotionally and physically, but the treatment I received saved my life and now gives me the chance of a cancer-free future.
