I'm now a Zero Hero
My gorgeous friend, Joanne Morrison, died from metastatic breast cancer in August 2023, at the age of 42, leaving her 8-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son without their Mum. Anyone who knew JoJo, knew she was the life and soul of every room and had a zest for life and a love of the ocean that inspired everyone. Jo was too young to die. Her children were too young to lose their Mum. Her partner shouldn’t have to parent alone. It is devastating on so many levels and yet Jo is only 1 of the 20,000 women diagnosed in Australia each year; one of the 3,200 Australians who die each year from this disease – that is 9 people a day dying from breast cancer and 1 woman under 40 each week! Why can’t we cure this? Why don’t we know more about this disease? Research funding is desperately needed into the most diagnosed cancer among women.
I am choosing to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (who receive no government funding) because since the NBCF started funding in 1994, death rates have reduced by 40% thanks in large part to research in prevention, early detection and new and improved breast cancer treatments. This is a progress but so much more is needed to understand risk factors, develop new ways to detect and treat breast cancer, and improve the quality of life for breast cancer patients, and ultimately save lives.
How am I going to do this? I am going to shave my head on 1st June 2024 and post the video online! I love my hair and it’s integral to my identity and shaving it seems like such a big deal to me but in reality is such a tokenistic gesture – because I am in the truly privileged position of knowing it will grow back. However, I truly hope shaving my head will draw attention to this cause and inspire you to donate whatever funds you can to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
