Kim Tanner

I've made a pledge to GO PINK!

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia.

Almost 20,000 women and men will be diagnosed this year. That’s 55 Australians every single day and a further 9 will lose their life.

This June, I've made a pledge to COLOUR IT AGAIN and raise funds for game-changing research into early detection and preventative treatments for breast cancer, which is vital to increasing survival rates.

Every donation, big or small, will get me closer to reaching my goal and helping the National Breast Cancer Foundation end deaths from breast cancer.

A little of my breast cancer story

Friday 27th May

It’s that time again!

I’m going PINK in June to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. I’ll be going out of my comfort zone and dying my hair PINK again ?

I’m not one to share too much personal information on social media and this post is definitely NOT a “woe is me” or for any sympathy. I’m sharing some of my story in the hope that I can help raise money for research that will lead to a cure for breast cancer.

For those of you who don’t know, I was diagnosed with Metastatic Hormone positive HER 2 negative breast cancer in March 2020. Tumours we’re found in my breast, neck, lymph, chest, pelvis, femur and spine.

It’s been a very hard and emotional journey so far. So many things in my life have changed because of the diagnosis.

I haven’t been able to return to the job I loved for 25 years. Thankfully I work for an organisation who have allowed me to work locally for as long as I need to. This has meant, that for the first time in those 25yrs, I’m learning new skills. It’s been overwhelming at times and to be honest I didn’t think I could do it, but I have.

I’ve been cured of my needle phobia through desensitisation. My shitty veins have endured a barrage of regular blood tests, monthly needles, 3-6monthly PET scans (to locate any cancer activity), radiation and a few operations.

I take a hand full of medications morning and night. These medications include hormone blockers to stop feeding the cancer, which sent me into premature menopause (and everything that goes along with that, YAY!!) oral cancer treatment which have the same side effects as chemo, but a lot less severe, and at one point made my liver start to fail. Thankfully the liver regenerates and mine did very well, allowing me to start on another, similar medication.

These medications have also done their job. Up until last month, I had no active tumours for over 18 months. But they also cause fatigued, nausea, hair thinning, weight gain and probably the most severe is the body and bone aches, all the time. I find it painful to walk most of the time which makes it very hard to exercise and do most things I once enjoyed doing.

Having said all of that, I’m extremely lucky and grateful for the advances in treatment that are now available because of the NBCF and their research.

I’m also very lucky and grateful to have so many people by my side for this fight. There are too many to name but they know who they are.

So please, if you can, donate to my go PINK in June page and help me help the researchers find a cure.

Thank you to my Sponsors
