Bye bye hair!
A few weeks ago, my housemate Nuala donated her hair to the Variety Children's Charity and raised money while doing so. This sense of charity and goodwill got me thinking, "what's stopping me from doing the same thing?" After evaluating a few options, I've decided to shave off my hair to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Australia's leading national body funding breast cancer research.
I want to disclaim that I myself haven't been personally impacted by breast cancer and I recognise that I'm very blessed to be able to say this. Unfortunately, not everyone can. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows that nearly 20,000 Aussies were diagnosed with breast cancer last year, leading to over 3000 lives lost - that's 8 people losing their life every day. And without extra community support and funding into research, these numbers aren't looking to change.
The National Breast Cancer Foundation aim to research into the diagnosis, management and treatment of breast cancer to reach the incredible goal of zero deaths by 2030. We live in unprecedented times, but organisations like the NBCF will continue to need our support so that they can keep the fight against breast cancer alive.
My heart goes out to all who have been touched by breast cancer in any way, and I hope that through these donations, we can help make a difference.
