My 57 Squat Challenge for breast cancer research
In May 2023 at age 35 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had found a lump on my breast but after having the referral done to further investigate this lump, I had discovered I was pregnant. Once I realised, I was pregnant I somewhat postponed the investigations as I had put this lump down to the natural changes in the breasts associated with a pregnancy.
Finally, after 4 weeks of postponing the specialist check-up, I locked in a date. An ultrasound had confirmed a mass in which they took biopsies. I received the devastating phone call 22nd May 2023 stating I had a reasonably fast-growing cancer in which surgery and treatment should be undertaken as soon as possible.
As I was early into a pregnancy, staging of the cancer could not be completed. I made the tough decision to terminate the pregnancy so that staging could be completed and treatment could commence as aggressively as the specialist deemed necessary. As much as I wanted that baby, I couldn’t risk not being there for my already 4-year-old daughter.
Fast forward to now, I have been through surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and now currently having hormone therapy. The emotional roller coaster I have been on continues today and at times is tricky to navigate.
This cause is obviously close to my heart and I would love to be able to raise funds for vital research. If you can spare a dollar or two that would be appreciated. Or if you would prefer to participate in this challenge, feel free to join my team.
