Elle Veitch

A bit about me...

Hi there!

Welcome to my fundraising page, I thought you'd probably like to get to know me and my story a little bit, so here it goes! My name is Elle and I'm 28. I was diagnosed with breast cancer on October 15th 2019, a day I will never forget.

I have a strong family history of breast cancer but I never thought I would be diagnosed, especially at 27. I didn't have a lump and in a lot of ways it was a combination of luck and having a GP who knows my family history, that caught my cancer.

I noticed in late 2019 that both my breasts felt fuller but the left side also felt like something inside my breast was blocked. I couldn't do anything without wearing a bra because I was in so much pain but because I had pain I didn't let myself worry about breast cancer.

Over about 6 weeks this pain continued but I also noticed some other symptoms. My nipples had always been slightly inverted but the left side had become much worse, I was noticing discharge from my nipple, a sharp, shooting pain in my nipple and extreme sensitivity around my nipple.

After about 7 weeks I mentioned these symptoms to the nurse I see for my contraceptive injection. She called my GP in to check but he couldn't feel a lump so he asked the nurse to also check to make sure he hadn't missed anything. No lump.

I was sent for an ultrasound and mammogram the same day, this was a Friday. The next day I was having a quiet day at home when I recieved a call from my GP to say they had seen abnormalities in my mammogram and ulatrasound. I was booked in for an urgent biopsy that coming Monday.

By the Wednesday I was a nervous wreck so I called my GP about the results. The radiologist had completely missed the area that needed to be biopsied so I had to have a more precise procedure called a stereotactic biopsy, this was done in hospital.

I had to wait almost 2 weeks to get this done and another week to get the results. I had gone back and forth in my mind so many times trying to convince myself it would be negative or benign but I also had times when I would prepare myself for news that I had cancer but I now know that nothing can prepare you for that news.

October 15th was the day I was diagnosed and honestly I think I've been in shock ever since that day, ever since those few words were spoken. The rollercoaster had well and truly begun and let me say, I HATE rollercoasters!

I was booked in for an emergency appointment with a breast surgeon two days later. I went in expecting that we would book in a lumpectomy and possible radiation and I had prepared myself for that but what I didn't prepare myself for was being told I would almost certainly need a mastectomy.

I refused to have a mastectomy so I booked in my lumpectomy for 3 weeks from that day. In the weeks leading up to my surgery I met with a genetic counsellor for genetic testing as well as a cancer psychologist and my own psychologist.

I had difficult and confronting conversations with them and most importantly with my family. It wasn't until the day my mum said to me "Elle, it's your breasts or your life" that I knew I needed to have not only a single mastectomy to remove the breast that had cancer but a double mastectomy to significantly reduce my chances of recurrence.

My family is the most important part of my life and I couldn't imagine my life without them or what their lives would be like without me, that kind of pain would be worse than any surgery could ever be.

I still went ahead with the lumpectomy as I wanted to remove as much of the cancer as possible as soon as possible. I had a double mastectomy 3 weeks later. Between the lumpectomy, with no clear margins, and the double mastectomy, I had a total of almost 10cm of cancer removed from my left breast. 10cm!! That blows my mind. How did I not feel a lump?! My GP couldn't believe that even he couldn't feel a lump.

I had expanders placed at the time of surgery and I am in the middle of reconstruction which is a whole other world of discomfort and pain.

The worst pain, however, has been the emotional pain. The day I was diagnosed, something in me changed. Something inside my heart went missing and it feels like it will be gone forever. I've been working extremely hard to overcome the trauma that I've been through but I have a long road ahead, both physically and emotionally.

Honestly, I'm surprised I'm even able to pull myself together enough to do this fundraiser but it feels too important not to fight for, it IS too important not to fight for. These women are too important not to fight for. So, if I need to do this while I move through my own grief and pain, then I will do it, because I know how many other women are out there feeling the same grief and pain as me and they are giving me a reason to fight.

Breast cancer is doing it's very best to beat us, to break us down, to destroy our lives but humans have the ability to fight back and to do that we need resarch, brilliant minds, new tests, new treatments and for THAT we need money.

We need people who are passionate about fighting back for people they know going through breast cancer, people they have lost to breast cancer or to protect the future of our children, our grandchildren or even a stranger walking down the street. I don't want anyone else to have their own October 15th.

This is where I ask for your help, if not for myself then please do it for someone you know, for someone you love or just because you want to be part of the fight. We can do this, but we need to do it together.

I've made a pledge to GO PINK!

This June, the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is challenging all Australians to make a pledge and GO PINK to raise funds in support of the thousands of women and men whose lives have been - and will be - impacted by breast cancer.

I've made a pledge to colour my hair PINK and raise funds for game-changing research into early detection and preventative treatments for breast cancer, which is vital to increasing survival rates.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019 at 27 years of age. I had High Grade DCIS and required a double mastectomy. My cancer was growing so quickly that it involved something called necrosis, this means the cancer is growing at such a fast rate that cancer cells that had already grown were dying to make way for new cancer cells to develop. By the end of my two surgeries, initially a lumpectomy followed by a double mastecomy, I had a total of 10cm of cancer removed.

Although I was negative for the BRCA gene, I do know my cancer was caused by a gene mutation. I have a strong family history of breast cancer but due to the limited amount of testing that can be done on genes that cause mutations, I still don't know which one caused my breast cancer.

By reaching my $1000 goal, this money will go straight to resarch into being able to detect a wider range of gene mutations specifically linked to breast cancer. Although this may not be able to directly help me now it could potentially help my sister and our future children through having testing for the same gene and ultimately this  could mean they avoid going through what I've gone through, this would be my greatest wish.

Please donate to my page and you’ll be helping the National Breast Cancer Foundation step closer to making this possible and reaching zero deaths by 2030.

YOU can make a difference. Let me know if you want to GO PINK with me!
