Angela’s fundraising awareness

By Angela King

Hello family and friends even strangers,

I have decided to do this fundraising event to raise awareness for breast cancer.

Did you know...

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in Australia (apart from non-melanoma skin cancer) and the second most common cancer to cause death in women, after lung cancer.1

Breast cancer is the abnormal growth of the cells lining the breast lobules or ducts. These cells grow uncontrollably and have the potential to spread to other parts of the body. Both men and women can develop breast cancer, although it is uncommon in men.

In Australia, the overall five year survival rate for breast cancer in females is 90%. If the cancer is limited to the breast, 96% of patients will be alive five years after diagnosis; this figure excludes those who die from other diseases. If the cancer has spread to the regional lymph nodes, five year relative survival drops to 80%.

In 2015, 16,852 women and 145 men were diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia. The risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer by age 85 is 1 in 8 for women and 1 in 651 for men.

In 2016, 2976 women and 28 men died of breast cancer in Australia.

The five year survival rate is 91%.

Some women even make the decision to remove their breasts. A mastectomy involves the removal of the whole breast. It is usually recommended if the breast cancer is large or if there is more than one cancer in the breast. A double mastectomy refers to the removal of both breasts. If you need, or choose to have a mastectomy, you may also consider having breast reconstruction surgery.

Which I couldn’t even imagine having to make that decision or how hard that must be.

This is why Im choosing to get physical and start exercising in January (which if anyone knows me I hate exercising) so therefore I want this commitment to go to the many women/men who are battling this awful disease.

I'm getting active and setting myself a challenge to raise money for NBCF and world-class breast cancer research.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is Australia’s leading national body funding game-changing breast cancer research with money raised entirely by the Australian public.

I believe research is the best way to prevent deaths, and improve how breast cancer is diagnosed, managed and treated.

All donations over $2 are tax deductible and you will be issued with a tax-deductible receipt via email as soon as you make your donation.
