Kon Mantzis - Hair Today Gone tomorrow!

Like many who experience cancer it came as a knock at the door, unexpected and unwelcome.

April 13th 2020 will be the day where life for our family changed forever. It was on this day that my wife of 20 years was diagnosed with Breast Cancer with no family history and no other signs other than a small lump. We made tough decisions, learnt a lot and faced the uncertainty head on.

While I can’t profess to understand first-hand what it was like to face surgery and a gruelling treatment schedule alone (her diagnosis was during covid) I have come to understand what strength of spirit really looks like.

Our outcome to date has been positive, unfortunately the outcome for many is not the same.

Through our involvement with the National Breast Cancer Foundation, we are collectively in support and at the forefront of the battle for better outcomes. The funds raised will directly support incredible research and researchers to achieve a vision of zero deaths from breast cancer.

In my own small way, I want to contribute. Hair is such a huge emotional challenge for many women who experience cancer treatment. I have been fortunate to be able to grow Samson like locks over the past two years and in support of those incredible women, and warriors that are fighting or who have fought breast cancer I have made the decision to cut it and raise money for life saving research.

Behind every statistic lies a story, a life cut short, a dream unrealised, and a family forever changed.

A productive and informative morning at Peter Mac with an update on the exciting cancer treatment that our collective fundraising is supporting. , it involves immunotherapy. The therapy uses the body’s own immune system to fight tumours.

The immune system consists of white blood cells, of which T cells are a very important type. By injecting a patient’s own T cells that have been modified to include an anti-cancer molecule, called a CAR, on their surface, the trial has been able to cure some blood cancers.

However to date the responses have been poor in solid cancers. Fortunately research has found a pathway to make CAR T cells work in solid tumour settings.

It is done by using a vaccine to stimulate CAR T cells through a molecule on T cells called T cell receptor. This approach is extremely effective, eradicating cancers of the breast, sarcoma and colon in mice. In order to translate this outcome in humans, the major hurdle is identifying a potent vaccine that stimulates T cell receptors that will work with most people.

During the pandemic, a number of COVID-19-vaccines were developed, and the majority of the vaccines are very good at stimulating T cell receptors, including the vaccines from Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson.

The researchers are seeking support to use SARS-CoV-2-specific T cells from vaccinated or COVID-19-recovered patients as a source of CAR T cells (Corona-CAR) and use a COVID mRNA vaccine to stimulate the Corona-CAR T cells to fight against cancers. If successful, this project

will provide a substantial breakthrough in cancer treatment, and translation to the clinic could be achieved in the short term.

This is a welcomed potential for those touched by cancer.
