Our 57 Squat Challenge for breast cancer research
Hi my name is Jo, and this is my story.
I'm in my early 40's and on 27/2/2023 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The words no one wants to hear! No pain, no symptoms or signs other than a small dimple above my nimple. No family history. The only reason I found it was I was diligent enough to ask my dr for a mammogram. 2023 was the hardest year for my husband, my family and dearest close friends as we went through it together. It changed my life overnight and I will never be the same! I had surgery 16/3/2023 and high fraction/ high dose radiation that started 10/5/2023, that left my husband caring for me during the treatment. On 22/6/2023 I started my five year long hormone treatment to turn off my ovaries. 17/1/2024 I had my ovaries removed and take a tablet now for 5 years.Β
57 Australians will be diagnosed with breast cancer today and a further 9 will lose their life. We want to make a difference to the lives of those 57 Australians impacted by the disease - that is why we are taking on the 57 Squat Challenge to raise vital funds for world-class breast cancer research. But they need your help.
Please support our squat challenge to save lives and make a difference.
Every donation, big or small, will get us closer to reaching our goal and helping the National Breast Cancer Foundation end deaths from breast cancer. Every donation over $2 is tax deductible you will receive an email receipt after you sponsor.Β
Whilst there is not a lot out there in terms of cures. It's the standard surgery, chemotherapy (which I opted no for) and radiation. I was one of the lucky ones that my cancer was 95% hormone receptive to estrogen and progesterone, so by turning my ovaries off it can stop feeding cancer cells. Not all women have that treatmentΒ and respond differently to treatment. It's the fear every year when you go in for a scan.Β
I saw this research that some incredibly smart people are looking into, and if I can do my bit... Maybe in 5-10 years time women will have better treatment than I had and a better overall outcome of life.
